After 3 years, new Mario Spelunker update


CHANGES

  • Increased powerups drops. Basically you get more powerups from “?” blocks instead of coins. Also they are now more varied from the start.
  • Drastically increased the chance of getting permanent upgrades in “?” blocks.
  • Muncher behaves more like a normal enemy now.
  • Halved the cost of items in the shop, making it more accessible.
  • Healthcare is socialized so now Estrogen is a free shop item.
  • Increased chance of getting the crown powerup in celebration of me being a girl now.
  • Nerfed the Kamek (shop owner) aggro ai.
  • Starts the game with one 1up now. I may revert this back to 0.

Commentary

The starkest contrast this game has with the original Spelunky is how the player’s power can fluctuate so much. Mario’s too strong when he’s powered up and too weak when he’s little. The “?” blocks rebalancing aims to make the player be “big Mario” more often and have more opportunities to outsmart the level with their new powers. After a while of not touching this project I finally decided to take a look into this game again. For better or for worse, this is still my most worked on project and my most polished baby.
